How Wizz Air handles compensation claims

73–87%

of claims only paid after court proceedings were issued

UK litigation data shows that 73–87% of compensation claims against Wizz Air were only paid out after legal proceedings had been started. Claiming on your own often means long waits, boilerplate rejections and going to court anyway.

Claiming directly with Wizz Air

Wizz Air only accepts EU261 claims through its own web form. Keep a copy of everything you submit — you will need it if your claim is rejected.

Tomo checks your flight for free, backs the claim with objective METAR weather data and escalates to legal action when needed. You only pay if we win.

When does Wizz Air owe you compensation?

EU Regulation 261/2004 covers every Wizz Air flight departing from an EU airport, and flights into the EU on an EU carrier. If a delay makes you arrive 3 hours or later at your final destination, or your flight was cancelled less than 14 days in advance, you are entitled to €250 to €600 — based on flight distance, not your ticket price.

A missed connection within a single booking counts too: what matters is the total delay at your final destination. And your claim does not expire quickly — in the Netherlands you can claim up to 2 years after the flight date.

When does Wizz Air not have to pay?

Compensation is only waived in ‘extraordinary circumstances’ — think extreme weather, air traffic control strikes or closed airspace. A technical fault or a strike by the airline's own staff usually does not qualify, according to the courts.

Airlines use the weather excuse more often than is justified. That is why Tomo backs every claim with METAR weather data from the airport itself: an objective test of whether Wizz Air's excuse holds up.

Wizz Air flight cancelled? These are your rights

When your flight is cancelled, Wizz Air must immediately offer you a choice: re-routing on an alternative flight, or a full refund within 7 days. That choice is your legal right, not a favour — and it is separate from compensation. Was the cancellation announced less than 14 days before departure? Then you are often owed €250, €400 or €600 compensation per passenger on top, unless the replacement flight gets you there at close to the original times.

Was your flight cancelled today? Check the live board above — Wizz Air flights cancelled today appear on it straight away, with an indication of the amount. Is your flight on there, or did you fly earlier? The free claim check gives you your answer in 2 minutes: claimable or not, and how much.

Is Wizz Air saying the cancellation was down to the weather? That excuse only holds if the weather made the flight objectively impossible. We test every weather rejection against the official METAR weather data from the airport itself — so you see in black and white whether Wizz Air's story stands up.

Frequently asked questions

How much compensation does Wizz Air have to pay?

€250 for flights up to 1,500 km, €400 up to 3,500 km and €600 beyond that. The amount depends on flight distance and your arrival delay, not on your ticket price.

How long can I still claim for a Wizz Air flight?

In the Netherlands up to 2 years after the flight date; other EU countries have different limitation periods. The sooner you claim, the easier it is to gather the evidence.

My Wizz Air claim was rejected because of the weather. Is that right?

Not necessarily. Weather is only a valid excuse if it objectively made the flight impossible. Tomo tests the excuse against METAR weather data from the airport — a significant share of weather rejections does not hold up.

What does it cost to claim against Wizz Air through Tomo?

Nothing upfront. We work no win, no fee: only when Wizz Air pays out do we deduct our fee. No hidden costs, no subscription.

Do I get compensation if Wizz Air rebooked me?

Often, yes. With a cancellation your arrival time on the rebooked flight is what counts: if you arrive 2 hours or later than planned, you usually keep the right to (part of) the compensation.

My Wizz Air flight was cancelled — do I get compensation?

Often, yes. If you were told less than 14 days before departure and the replacement flight did not get you there at close to the original times, Wizz Air owes you €250 to €600 per passenger — unless there genuinely were extraordinary circumstances. Your right to re-routing or a refund within 7 days always stands alongside that.

What should I do first?

First have Wizz Air rebook or refund you — do not accept a voucher if you would rather have cash; a voucher is only valid with your consent. Keep your boarding pass, the cancellation email and receipts for food, hotels and transport. Then run the free claim check: within 2 minutes you will know whether there is compensation in it too.
